abstract = "This study aimed to analyze the transformations occurred in the
Brumado river basin unsing the Normalized Difference Vegetation
Index (NDVI) calculated within Landsat 5 images in a temporal
scale (07/10/1987 and 06/10/2011). NDVI is one of the most popular
vegetation index, because it can compensate differences in
illumination conditions, surface slope and any other unknown
reason. Its proved that the vegetation has influence in the
quality and the quantity of water in a basin. The studied area is
located in the Center-South region of Bahia, and is an important
tributary of Contas River, belonging to the Eastern Atlantic
hydrographic region. The river basin is the basis for the
management of water resources; for that, studies in these areas
are so important. The images were processed in a GIS software. The
results show the efficiency of the NDVI and image processing
techniques to portray the land cover of an area and the changes
that had happened. The percentage of the area without vegetation
or covered by low density biomass increased among the years, while
the portion covered by medium and high density biomass has
decreased. Certainly, this had happened due the human impact
against the vegetated areas, mostly for agricultural uses.",
